Andy Clockwise performed at the Troubadour on Tuesday, July 13th. It was a pity there wasn’t a larger audience as the show was amazing. I’m now definitely a fan.
This was by far the most fun I’ve had shooting a band in a long time. Crocodiles opened for Dum Dum Girls last week at The Echo and put on a fantastic show, but there was no light on stage. They had set up two red flood lights on the ground on the stage that were the only lighting for their entire set but it was barely enough to see the band let alone take a decent photo. For the first few songs I thought I was screwed, I was a few people back from the edge of the stage and worried that trying to use a flash on my own wouldn’t work. But then I realized why not take advantage of everyone else’s flash, there were four or five other photographers with DSLR’s that had flashes going off and of course there were flashes from point and shoot cameras, so I simply extended my exposure time to take advantage. I opened up my lens for five seconds and waited for flashes to go off. Not only did I get a lot of well lit, interesting captures, but I also got a lot of cool double and triple exposures. I also busted out a small handheld flash that I could set off by hand and would hit that if no other flashes went off within the five seconds my lens was open. And what’s cool about that flash is that it’s a color splash with small gels built in that add color to your subject.
Anyway, it was a lot of fun to shoot and I’m thrilled with how the images turned out.
In lieu of regular email blasts, at the end of each month I write a brief overview of what I’ve been up to and put together a mixtape of ten songs I listened to in the last month. If you’re interested in subscribing to my quarterly email blast (only four emails a year!) click on the Quarterly Report at the bottom of the page.
Happenings
June has been a month of rebuilding, reorganizing, and figuring out a bunch of stuff. The Henry Clay People music video I directed was released in June and well received. I took some photos of some big bands: LCD Soundsystem, The XX, Brian Jonestown Massacre. Two bands to point out that I saw in June that are amazing are Tijuana Panthers from Long Beach and Federale from Portland; both are worth checking out. I’ve also been hanging out with my dog quite a bit which has been nice. Planning the next big push.

I still need to finish off the last four interviews for This Ain’t a Scene which are still not published, but they will be up in July, do or die. Some exciting stuff happening with L.A. Record as well.
